Diego Llorente will continue to get better and build on his “outstanding” displays for Leeds United, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England striker backed the Spaniard to be Marcelo Bielsa’s first-choice centre-back.
Football Insider revealed last week Bielsa intends to build his defence around Llorente and regards him as the club’s best all-round defender.
The 27-year-old has started their last seven Premier League games after injuries meant he had managed just two appearances by the end of February.
The Whites have lost just two games in that time and conceded six goals in that time.
He also has seven Spain caps under his belt and his national team boss Luis Enrique revealed earlier this season he had helped Sergio Ramos reach new levels in his performance.
Asked for his assessment of Llorente’s appearances for the Yorkshire giants, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “You can tell his recent performances have been outstanding.
“When he first came in he looked a bit suspect but it looks like he’s improving with every game he plays in the Premier League.
“He’s getting used to the players, he’s getting used to the tempo of the games.
“Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk, whoever else has got a battle on their hands to be the number two centre-half alongside Llorente.”
Llorente partnered club captain Cooper against Manchester City at the weekend before Struijk was introduced after he was sent off.
He is yet to play alongside Robin Koch who has made just three substitute appearances since suffering a knee injury at the end of December.
In other news, Leeds United may be about to sign the next Andy Robertson.
