Andrea Radrizzani has panned Thomas Christiansen’s management style for leaving Leeds United players “stressed” at the start of their matches.
The United chief has claimed in an interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post that the 44-year-old, who was sacked as manager on Sunday night, failed to deliver the leadership needed to instill confidence in the players.
Radrizzani pointed out the deficiencies in Christiansen’s management as he confessed he got it wrong by appointing someone with no experience of the Championship or in a leading European league.
“Anything that doesn’t work is a mistake so yes, I did make a mistake,” Radrizzani said to the Yorkshire Evening Post. “I apologise to the fans and the club, and for my experience I need to learn and analyse better my choice before making it.”
The United owner, who took full control of the club last May, spilled the beans on how the Leeds players were left feeling at the start of games and how it had an immediate negative impact.
‘If you watch the games we conceded so many chances early on, in the first few minutes,” Radrizzani explained to the YEP. “This is a sign that mentally the players are not relaxed. They are stressed and this is why I could feel that probably the manager was not transmitting security and confidence.
“I wish him good luck and success and he will have the time to grow but at the same time I think this league is competitive, very difficult and he probably lacked a little bit in terms of knowledge of the football.
“More than that he needs to improve in terms of communication and leadership and confidence, which is a word I used a lot with him but it didn’t improve.”
Christiansen was sacked on Sunday with the announcement made at 9.30pm, and Leeds acted swiftly to replace him, appointing Paul Heckingbottom 36 hours later.
It is reported that United activated the £500,000 release clause in the former defender’s contract, signed only last Friday, to bring him to Elland Road and charge him with reigniting the club’s promotion pursuit.
In other Leeds news, the club have been hit by yet another shattering senior player injury blow.
