Andrea Radrizzani has warned Leeds United flops they will be shipped out in the summer as he plans yet another squad overhaul.
United signed 16 senior players in the wake of Radrizzani taking sole control of the club last summer and added a further four in the January as Laurens De Bock, Adam Forshaw, Tyler Roberts and Yosuke Ideguchi were recruited.
Additionally, there has also been mass recruitment at youth-team level as director of football Victor Orta has focused on swelling the numbers in the development squad.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Radrizzani explained that Leeds have already spent their budget on players wages after a round of long-term contracts were handed to first teamers earlier this season on top of the new arrivals.
The Italian businessman believes the senior squad is now top-heavy and he will be looking to cut the numbers and get rid of those not up to the mark.
“On our side, for Leeds, we’ve achieved already the top of our budget in terms of salaries,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post. “We should actually cut some for next year because we have probably too many players. My idea for the squad is 20 players plus four or six coming from the youth.”
Asked by the regional newspaper if the transfers have been up to the mark, Radrizzani replied, “For me, yes. We were in a different situation this year because we overloaded the club, both in the first team and in Under-23s, with a lot of foreigners. Now we will have to select more and see who deserves to stay – build more quality and be more competition.”
Leeds appointed Paul Heckingbottom as their new manager earlier this week on an 18-month contract as Thomas Christiansen paid the price for the team slipping to 10th in the Championship and seven points outside of the play-off spots.
He takes charge of his first match against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday.
In other Leeds United news, Andrea Radrizzani has hit back at criticism of the club’s transfer policy and hailed two Victor Orta signings who are gems.
