26 goals in 41 games: Benitez plots swoop for Serie A goal machine - report

By Aramide Oladipo

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is interested in signing Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a report.

Don Balon claim that the Spaniard wanted to bring Icardi to the Santiago Bernabéu during his short spell in charge at Real Madrid, but president Florentino Perez refused to sanction the move.

The report claims that the Newcastle boss knows it will be a difficult task but he hopes that the chance to play in the Premier League is enough to attract Icardi to St James’ Park.

Inter Milan have experienced a poor season as they currently find themselves in eighth position in Serie A, 29 points behind leaders Juventus, with just two matches remaining.

Despite this, Icardi has still enjoyed a prolific season, scoring 26 goals in just 41 appearances in all competitions..

Having already been told that there is money to spend this summer, Rafa Benitez could well gamble on bringing the Argentine striker to St James’ Park.

Football Insider verdict:

Icardi would be a great addition to the Newcastle United squad for the upcoming season in the Premier League. The Argentine has spent four years at Inter Milan and there hasn’t been much progress since his arrival so there is a chance that he might be tempted to prove himself in one of the biggest leagues in the world. Icardi also flirted with a move to England last year when there was interest from Arsenal. Newcastle will have to spend a lot of money if they want to acquire his services though, after he signed an extension to his contract at the beginning of this season. He’s under contract at the San Siro until 2021.
