Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez believes that his defender Jamaal Lascelles is worth £50million, and should be on the plane to Russia this Summer with England.
Speaking to the Sun, Benitez claimed that Lascelles is as good as £50million rated Manchester City target Harry Maguire.
When asked if the two were on the same level Benitez replied,
“For me, for sure. He has great potential because he is keen to learn in every training session, He has a great attitude and is working on his leadership.”
The quality of the 24-year-old is undeniable, as in the five game period in which the Newcastle enforcer was injured, the Magpies lost four and conceded 15 goals.
During his four-year association with Newcastle, Lascelles has represented England at the Under-21s level – leading to some, including his manager, calling for him to be called up to the Senior squad.
“You don’t have too many centre-backs around with this presence and this character,
“If he continues learning things, he can be an important player in England.”
Lascelles has impressed his managers over the years for his willingness to lead, despite often playing in a locker room filled with older team mates.
It is this passion for football that has sometimes landed him in trouble, as evidenced by a training ground bust up with team-mate Mohamed Diame.
In other Newcastle news, the Magpies have reportedly missed out on this highly rated attacker from Hearts.
