Raheem Sterling: Pundit cites Liverpool amid double deal update

Kevin Campbell has backed Man City stars Raheem Sterling and Nathan Ake to bring success to Chelsea if they can complete a mega-money double deal.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the pair are still valuable assets to Thomas Tuchel despite the Citizens’ seeming willingness to sanction exits.

The Telegraph report (27 June) that Chelsea have opened talks with Man City over a rare double swoop for contract rebel Sterling and fringe star Ake.

The report claims both players are open to the idea of joining the Stamford Bridge club this summer.

A deal for the serial Premier League champions would be Todd Boehly’s first signings since seizing control of Chelsea with a £4.25billion takeover.

Campbell suggested City’s willingness to sell doesn’t mean the two players cannot bring success to the Blues.

He cited the reported £49million deal which took Sterling to Man City from Liverpool in 2015.

“Man City took Sterling away from Liverpool in the first place,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Was he wanted by Liverpool in the end? No, they didn’t want him around.

“He’s gone on to win all these titles at City and all these accolades.

“It’s all about huge players. Managers want these quality players in, like Sterling and Ake, because they know they can bring this success to their teams.

“That’s how it works.”

Sterling scored 17 goals in 47 appearances during the 2021/22 season as Man City lifted the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Ake played 27 times across all competitions – including just 10 starts in the top-flight.
