Rangers and rival fans could not contain their laughter at Nectarios Triantis’ comical mistake as the Glasgow giants beat Hibernian 3-1 on Saturday afternoon (30 March).
Rangers returned to the top of the Scottish Premiership table this weekend after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Hibs at Ibrox.
James Tavernier was once again on the scoresheet after he recovered from an earlier missed penalty to give the hosts the lead.
Hibs drew level through Myziane Maolida on the brink of half-time before Cyriel Dessers restored Gers’ lead just moments later.
Rabbi Matondo wrapped up the victory with a late goal but all talk on social media was directed at Hibernian midfielder Triantis.
The 20-year-old Australian fired a free-kick directly at teammate Joe Newell which ricocheted onto defender Will Fish – leaving both players down on the ground.
Fans on social media reacted to the bizarre incident, with supporters calling the moment “brilliant” and “incredible”.
Philippe Clement’s side will now turn their full attention to an upcoming Old Firm clash against arch-rivals Celtic next Sunday (7 April).
Rangers currently lead Celtic by two points in the table with 30 games played.
However, Brendan Rodgers’ side could return to the peak of the Premiership when they face Livingston on Sunday afternoon (31 March).
