Rangers and Celtic in ‘unthinkable’ situation ‘no one wants’ after statement – pundit
Paddy Kenny claims watching a clash between Rangers and Celtic with only 500 fans present is “unthinkable.”
As such, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United stopper backed the SPFL’s plans to stop the season after the next round of fixtures.
On Wednesday (22 December) the SPFL announced the postponement of some of the Premiership’s festive fixtures.
Games scheduled for 29 December and 2 January have been moved to February, effectively bringing forward the annual winter break.
In a statement on Tuesday (21 December) Celtic confirmed they had asked the SPFL to move the scheduled winter break forward by a week.
As per the Scottish Sun (21 December) Rangers were against the move and Kenny can understand both arguments.
“I can see the logic in pushing everything back a month,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“The hope is that in a month we have a handle on Covid and things can go back to normal.
“The problem is, in a month’s time we could be in the same situation, it could be worse. We just don’t know.
“From the fan perspective, it’s the right move. Imagine an Old Firm with 500 fans, that’s unthinkable.
“That still might be the case in February though, no one wants that.
“Behind closed doors was bad and this would pretty much be the same.
“I see why Celtic wanted to stop the league and I can see why Rangers wanted to play on.
“I think fan safety has to come first and at the moment.”

Rangers were set to face Celtic at Parkhead on 2 January.
The game will now be played on 2 February.
In other news, a pundit has claimed one Rangers star could force an exit this January.
