Rangers are reeling after another high-profile exit – Keith Wyness
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness believes Rangers have some “very serious” issues to address following another high-profile exit at Ibrox.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed matters off the pitch are having an impact on the players’ performances.
Former Rangers director John Gilligan is temporarily filling in as chairman after John Bennett stood down on health grounds last month, while the club are also without a CEO following James Bisgrove’s departure earlier this year.
The Scottish Sun reported on 8 October Creag Robertson has now quit his role as director of football operations and is expected to leave Ibrox before the end of this year.
Rangers have endured a difficult start to the season as they currently sit five points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership table.
Ianis Hagi had an eventful first appearance of the campaign in the 2-0 win against St. Johnstone on 6 October, having come off the bench to record an assist before later being sent off.
Rangers boardroom tensions are impacting on-field results
Wyness revealed the boardroom tensions at Ibrox will not be helping the Rangers players psychologically.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The whole thing does come from the top.
“People don’t realise just having been in a club, you don’t realise just how much that impacts the whole feeling, the mood, everything from all week in training all the way through.
“Tempers often start to fray. People feel unsure and these sorts of things happen in a game and that’s directly in the subconscious.
“I’m not trying to be an amateur psychologist, but I think player subconscious is affected.
“They want to try and show that they really care about the club and they fight more. Then they start making mistakes because of that and I think that it does come from the top.

“I think Rangers have got some very serious issues as we all know right now, and I’m sure we’ll be talking about that in the weeks to come.
“But I think it is a symptom of an unsettled club and an unsettled situation.
“Clement has got his work cut out and we’ll be watching them closely.”
