Rangers backed to agree ‘really clever signing’ of Man United star

Rangers have been backed to complete the “really clever” signing of Man United star Jonny Evans in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, explained that the 37-year-old’s wealth of experience would benefit Philippe Clement in the dressing room.

Robinson has insisted that Rangers need to add leaders to their squad given their current situation, while the manager needs allies and support from his players.

This comes after a turbulent first half of the season which has seen Clement’s side drop 11 points behind league-leaders Celtic despite their 3-0 win against their at Ibrox on 2 January.

Evans, meanwhile, has proved he can still play at the top level after a number of impressive performances since his surprise return to Man United in 2023.

The centre-back has made 12 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions so far this season, but has featured just twice since Ruben Amorim’s arrival.

His position as a backup defender to the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire has led to speculation that he could be available this month.

Evans’ potential move to Ibrox was publicly backed by Gers legend Kris Boyd live on Sky Sports as Clement looks to add experience to his squad.

Now, Robinson has joined the support for the centre-back’s signing at Rangers, and has insisted it could be a major coup for the club in their current situation.

It’d be a really clever signing,” he told Football Insider.

“Jonny has proven he can still play in the Premier League and can still perform at that level.

“We all know he’s at the twilight of his career, but when the chips are down sometimes you need leaders in the dressing room and allies in the dressing room.

“He’s a manager and a coach, but he’s still playing, so for the manager to have that type of player around, with his leadership qualities, could be big.

“If Rangers can get him and pull that off, it would be a really clever and shrewd signing.

“It could be a good option for Jonny Evans if he’s not in Amorim’s plans at Man United.”
