Rangers look set to miss out on the shock signing of legendary Spanish striker Fernando Torres, according to a report, with the former Chelsea, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker on the brink of signing for MLS side Chicago Fire.
Fox Sports Mexico claim that the striker will sign with the Men in Red and join Veljko Paunovic’s side as they look to salvage their season after a disappointing start to the campaign.
Torres had been linked with a possible move to Ibrox as part of Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox revolution as Gers fans hoped to see the striker join Gerrard’s squad.
Football Insider verdict:
Torres coming to Ibrox was always an outside bet and reports he is heading to join the Fire make a bit more sense than him heading to Ibrox. Although it would have been fantastic to see him strutting his stuff in the Scottish Premiership, the Gers could really do with someone a bit younger. The Ibrox giants will need to bring in at least one, and arguably two, strikers this summer as Gerrard gets to work and add some quality to the frontline. Torres would almost certainly have demanded a sizeable wage to head to Ibrox and it would probably be for the best that the Gers missed out on him as it lets them spend on someone else who could help recoup his transfer value further down the line. Still, after watching the likes of Fran Sandaza turn out for the Light Blues in recent years, it makes a pleasant change to see them linked with bonafide stars who have proven themselves at the very highest level.
