Rangers board ‘confident’ in Danny Rohl as late signing blitz gets green light

Rangers will have to target young talent if they want to add to their squad in the final days of the January transfer window.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who states that Rangers may have to move on players like Danilo and Youssef Chermiti if they want to boost their transfer budget.

Rangers are prepared to let Danilo leave Ibrox if a replacement can be found, whilst Chermiti’s future remains unclear.

Chermiti joined Rangers from Everton in a deal worth up to £10million last summer, but the 21-year-old has only scored four times for the club.

Rangers face ‘constraints’ in transfer spending

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Rangers may only be able to sign players under £5m.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the Gers are in the “best position” to win the Scottish Premiership title this season.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “We know that there will still be constraints because the money that they already spent on Danilo, Chermiti, etc.

They spent serious money on those players, and so they’ve still got to work out whether they can move them on at any price or not. But still, I think the 49ers will back them around players under the five million mark.

“Therefore, it’s young talent they’re looking for. But I do think that Danny Rohl has got the confidence of the board to release some purse strings and to get things going. Last weekend, they emerged in probably the best position of the three at the moment. Heart’s still leading, but there’s no doubt they can feel the breath on the back of their necks from Rangers.”

Rangers make bid for striker

Danny Rohl is targeting a new forward to round off his January transfer business, with Rangers having made a bid to sign Ryan Naderi.

Rangers have offered £2.6m to sign Naderi, with the 22-year-old an up-and-coming striker at German club Hansa Rostock.

If that move fails to materialise, Rangers could sign Motherwell forward Tawanda Maswanhise, who has also caught the attention of rivals Celtic.
