Rangers boardroom lambasted after new 49ers takeover development – CEO source
Rangers are expected to have new owners at last in the coming months with widespread reports suggesting 49ers Enterprises have agreed a deal in principle to buy a majority stake.
The Ibrox club presently have seven major shareholders with most of them holding a position on the board of the Glasgow giants.
Rangers have already been warned about the idea of becoming a feeder club with the 49ers also owning English Championship side Leeds United.
But Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted the takeover is a massive positive for the Glasgow giants.
Current Rangers board are ‘not good custodians’, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested some current board members at Rangers are doing the role for “social status” and are “not good custodians” of the club.
This season, the Glasgow giants are well off the pace in the Scottish Premiership and look set to allow Celtic the chance to win another domestic treble.
Wyness insisted the 49ers will bring “new thinking and new energy” to Rangers.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There’s no point in the 49ers doing it if they don’t get 51% of the club.
“There’s such an entrenched lethargy in the old board, who are there because they want to be seen as Rangers directors – with the social status that comes with.
“They aren’t there as good custodians of the club, that’s my opinion.
“There will now be football professionals in, which is so important in them getting a majority stake.
“The 49ers can try and bring some new thinking and new energy into the club.”

McCoist backs McInnes for Rangers job
Ally McCoist exclusively told Football Insider on Thursday (6 March) that he remains convinced over Derek McInnes’ capability if named Rangers manager despite struggling at Kilmarnock this season.
The 53-year-old has regularly been linked with a switch to Ibrox, none more so than when Philippe Clement was under tremendous pressure as the Rangers boss up until last month.
Barry Ferguson is currently in interim charge of the club after replacing Clement in the dugout.
