Pundit wowed by ‘very clever’ Gerrard after Morelos latest at Rangers

Steven Gerrard has demonstrated “superb man-management” to get the best out of mercurial Rangers centre-forward Alfredo Morelos.

So says ex-England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the relationship between player and manager.

As quoted by The Guardian on 20 October, Gerrard insisted that five goals in 15 matches was “not enough” for a player of Morelos’ calibre.

The fiery Colombian responded by netting the winning goal in Rangers’ 2-1 win over St Mirren on 24 October, his 100th for the club.

Speaking to The Times after the match, the manager said “we are all very proud of him” and that he must now go on and be “hungry for more goals”.

Gerrard will hope that Morelos can find the back of the net again against Aberdeen in tomorrow evening’s (27 October) fixture.

Morelos is Rangers’ record European goalscorer and has reached a century of strikes for the Scottish champions in 199 matches.

Robinson credited Gerrard for his ability to provoke a performance out of the man affectionately known as ‘El Bufalo’ at Ibrox.

“This is superb man-management,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“It is very clever from Gerrard, highlighting his flaws and saying his record isn’t great. He’s immediately started scoring goals.

“From the player’s point of view, it’s just a little nudge in his direction. Really smart.

“He’s saying: ‘Look, if you want to keep playing, you’re going to have to start scoring goals again.'”
