Billy Kirkwood: This is what Rangers are trying to emulate from Bayern Munich
Rangers youth coach Billy Kirkwood hopes the Gers can emulate the “production line” at Bayern Munich after watching the Ibrox side’s Under-20’s win 2-1 against the Germans on Saturday.
The Gers have been overhauling the club’s Academy in recent years and have embarked on an ambitious programme of games against elite European and English sides this season instead of competing in the SPFL’s Development League.
A number of Rangers youngsters have made their first-team debut over the last 12 months with David Bates, Ross McCrorie, Aidan Wilson, Jamie Barjonas, Myles Beerman and Kyle Bradley all stepping into the senior side.
Kirkwood hopes the Gers can follow the German’s lead and insists his players should learn from the experience of playing against the Germans.
“Credit where credit is due – I think Bayern are an exceptionally good team and are doing very well in the UEFA Youth League,” Kirkwood said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“They have a good standard of player and can afford to go and buy players from other teams in Germany at 16 or 17.
“They have a good production line – but we are hoping that can happen at Rangers as well.
“You are always going to get ups and downs with young players. They have to learn from their bad experiences as well as their good experiences, and this trip has been a very good experience.”
The Ibrox side’s Under-20’s have faced the likes of Liverpool, Feyenoord, Benfica, Mechelen and Manchester City so far this season as part of the Academy Games programme.
Despite losing head coach Graeme Murty in October after he was appointed first-team manager, the Gers Under-20’s have kept up their impressive form against some of the best youth sides in Europe.
With a number of last season’s Under-20’s regulars now a big part of the first-team squad, the young Gers will hope to continue to impress Graeme Murty between now and the end of the season and earn a call-up to the first-team.
In other Rangers news, there have been discussions held about the Gers’ hunt to sign this international playmaker from the Premier League.
