Rangers could axe Morelos after confirmed news ahead of Brondby tonight

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Steven Gerrard could axe Alfredo Morelos from the Rangers starting XI.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward praised Gerrard for calling out Morelos’ poor form.

The striker has scored five times in 15 games across all competitions this season, including two in his last 10.

After his display against Hearts at the weekend, Gerrard told the Daily Record, he must “sharpen up”.

The Ibrox boss doubled down ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Brondby tomorrow (21 October) and insisted to BBC Sport that his goalscoring record this term is not good enough.

Morelos is stuck on 99 Rangers goals and became the club’s record scorer in European competitions last year.

Asked whether Gerrard would drop the Colombia international for their vital European clash, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think he would.

“Gerrard is the type of manager who would drop anyone if you’re not doing it.

“He’s right to call out players aren’t doing it because he set such high standards himself as a player. He’ll expect that as a coach.”

Rangers have lost both of their Europa League group games so far – a 2-0 loss to Lyon and a 1-0 away defeat to Sparta Prague.

Brondby drew with Sparta in their opening game and therefore sit third in group A ahead of Rangers.

The top two will qualify for the knockout stages while third place will drop into a Europa Conference league play-off round before the knockout stages get underway.

In other news, Rangers are set for crushing triple January blow that will ‘have a bearing on the title race’.
