Kieran Maguire: Rangers board set for Ibrox row after ‘huge’ King news

Dave King’s bid to return to the Rangers board may stem from his disillusionment with the current regime.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about King’s sensational plot to return to Ibrox.

King, who has been involved behind the scenes at Rangers for over two decades, stepped down as chairman in March 2020.

But it has not been a clean break for the 66-year-old who has repeatedly gone on record criticising the hierarchy’s leadership.

In a dramatic development, he told the Daily Mail on Monday (13 December) that he is looking to re-join the club’s executive branch.

The South Africa-based entrepreneur is the club’s largest stakeholder, though he has agreed to transfer all his shares to fan group Club 1872.

Maguire suggests that his “huge” disappointment with facets of the current regime’s premiership may explain his campaign to return to Ibrox.

He told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams: “There are legacy issues in terms of King’s relationship with some people on the board.

“It has been mooted that he is hugely disappointed with the lack of fan engagement. That might go some way to explaining this news.

“Also, it could be that he was disappointed that Rangers went through an alternative route in their own share offering.

“It might be that he feels that has made it more difficult to transfer his shares to Club 1872.

“Under those circumstances, he may feel the best way to represent his views and the fans’ is to return to the board.”

Rangers laid on a £6.75million public share offering in June this year.

That scheme was run in conjunction with King’s £13m deal to transfer his stake in Rangers to Club 1872.
