Rangers could beat English clubs to sign Kwame Poku in January – sources
Rangers could beat English clubs to the signing of Peterborough star Kwame Poku in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Scottish giants could open talks as soon as January to convince him to make the move to Glasgow.
Poku, 23, has been tipped as a “smart signing” for any interested club as he approaches the end of his contract with the League One side at the end of the season.
Sources say Rangers would be able to poach the winger for a “minimal” compensation fee because of the cross-border transfer rules.
However, a number of Championship clubs are eyeing a move to sign him in January, and Peterborough would prefer to bring in a fee rather than lose him for nothing.
The winger has been identified as a potential cheap deal for Rangers given their difficult financial situation.
At just 23 years old, there would be a view to sell the player for a profit in the future – as is the preferred model of director of football Nils Koppen.
Rangers eye move to sign Kwame Poku in January
Poku’s performances in the third tier of English football have attracted interest from a number of clubs who are willing to give him the chance to step up.
In 17 appearances across all competitions so far this season, the winger has picked up ten goals and seven assists, averaging one goal contribution per game.
Having added consistent and reliable end product to his game, there is now a view that he is ready to take the next step in his career.
In the summer of 2021, Poku made the move up the divisions from League Two outfit Colchester and has been allowed to hone his skills in two spells under Darren Ferguson.
Peterborough’s record with improving young players before selling for a profit is proven, and was seen in Ronnie Edwards’ £3million move to Southampton in the summer.

Due to their prior success, Posh will look to sell Poku in a permanent January deal and continue their trend of buying low and selling for a profit.
However, there is confidence at Ibrox that they could convince the player to make the move for free, and they will be able to officially open talks over a pre-contract deal in January.
