Rangers could include special clause in Joe Aribo deal after £10m update – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Rangers could offer Joe Aribo a new contract with a release clause included to avoid being forced into a cut-price sale.

The former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, called the 25-year-old a “prized asset”.

The Sun (14 May) claim Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are in the hunt to sign Aribo this summer, with the midfielder’s contract situation meaning the Gers may have to sell for £10million or less.

Aribo’s current terms expire next summer, meaning the Gers could lose him on a free transfer.

As quoted by Football Scotland in February, Van Bronckhorst confirmed the club were planning contract talks with the Nigeria international.

Hutton suggested if Rangers do not receive an acceptable transfer offer this summer that they could negotiate a new deal with an acceptable release clause included.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s probably one of their prized assets. The contract running down, if there’s no fee that’s acceptable, they’re going to have to try and tie him down.

“It could be a case of if you sign this new contract, we’ll put this release clause in there. If a team does come calling, we’ll allow you to go.

“There are obviously talks that will have to go on between representatives and the club. I think he is such an important part to this Rangers team and Giovanni moving forward.”

Aribo joined Rangers on a free contract after leaving Charlton in 2019.

He has played 147 times across all competitions for the Glasgow giants.
