Rangers could submit ‘big-money’ Graham Potter offer – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed a potential Rangers move for out-of-work boss Graham Potter would be “expensive”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it will be “difficult” to convince the ex-Chelsea boss to take a step down in salary terms to move to Ibrox.

Speaking to Football Insider last week (25 October), ex-England international Paul Robinson claimed Potter would be tempted by the Rangers job should they choose to part ways with Philippe Clement.

Clement is under pressure at Ibrox with his side already six points adrift of joint-leaders Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Potter is out of work after leaving Chelsea last year (2023) after a short-lived reign at Stamford Bridge.

Potter appointment will be ‘difficult’ for Rangers, says Wyness

Wyness claimed the English boss may feel he is destined to receive a “certain level of remuneration” after his time with the Blues.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s been a mixed week for Rangers, they won 4-0 against Steaua Bucharest – a good result even if it wasn’t against the strongest opposition.

“It was a pretty poor result against St Mirren, it could have easily gone the other way.

“I don’t think the fans were happy with that display.

“In terms of Graham Potter now coming in, I think it would be an expensive move for Rangers.

“Unless Potter feels he can go there on a lower wage, it will be difficult.

“I’ve been there with managers who feel they are at a certain level of remuneration – and if they ever go below that, they feel they may never get back up to where they were once.”
