‘Rangers could transform transfer profits after extraordinary reveal’

Rangers have been told how to transform their profitability on player sales following an “extraordinary” reveal.

The Scottish giants have largely failed to make money on players in recent years after several of their signings have underwhelmed at Ibrox.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Rangers made just £8million profit on player sales between 2015 and 2021.

However, that figure has risen to around £41million over the past three accounting periods as the Glasgow side look to make a profit on their players.

Nico Raskin has been linked with a Rangers exit, with the club believed to have placed a £25million asking price on his head this summer.

Aston Villa and Leeds United are among the Premier League clubs to be linked with the 24-year-old, while European giants Porto, Marseille and Fiorentina have recently joined the race to sign the midfielder.

Raskin registered five goals and 11 assists in 48 appearances for Rangers in the 2024-25 season and captained the side on multiple occasions.

The Belgium international made the move to Ibrox in a £1.7million deal from Standard Liege in January 2023.

Rangers told to develop £35m players

Borson insisted Rangers have to start developing £25-35million stars after their player-sale numbers have been “extraordinary” over the past decade.

He told Football Insider: “One of the most important aspects of the future for Rangers in terms of competing is starting to generate money from player sales.

“It’s really extraordinary. If you look at the last 10 years, this is the last 10 years of profit from player sales. In 2015, it was £1million, 2016 zero, 2017 zero, 2018 £1million, 2019 £3million, 2020 £1million, 2021 £2million.

“Just in the last two or three years, they started to make a little bit, with £11million, £24million and £6million, so £41million in the last three seasons. But before that, it was almost zero. That’s really important.

“If they could start to get to where they become effectively a place where players go to develop and then move to let’s say the Premier League, that will completely transform the profitability and the ability of Rangers to then invest.

“It becomes a virtuous cycle because they can sell a player that allows you to buy two promising players from let’s say Holland.

“You develop them in Scotland, they become £25-35million players, you sell them on, and you keep going like that.

“But historically, they’ve not been able to do that either with players that they brought in or with youth players.”
