Rangers Exclusive: Itten is giving Gerrard big problem behind the scenes

Cedric Itten is giving Steven Gerrard a major headache with his impressive performances for Rangers, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds and Aberdeen striker has insisted it is “fantastic” to see fringe players stepping up and taking their chances at Ibrox.

Itten, 23, marked only his fifth Rangers start with a goal in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Lech Poznan – a victory which ensured the Light Blues finished top of their Europa League group.

The Switzerland international, who is arguably the fourth-choice striker at Ibrox, also set up Jermain Defoe for the final goal in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Ross County.

Whelan has insisted that everyone is showing the same passion and quality under Gerrard and that the fringe figures like Itten are causing him selection problems.

Whelan told Football Insider: “When you’re sitting there at the top of the mountain where the air is crisp, these things come to you. I think it’s fantastic – everyone’s singing off the same hymn sheets, everyone’s doing their jobs.

“No matter when they’re called upon, no matter the changes, they’re still getting the same quality. We talk about desire, heart, fight and showing what they can do, everyone’s doing it and Steven Gerrard must be so delighted.

“No matter who he puts in that side, they go out there and do a job, you need those fringe players to go out there and put in a performance on a Thursday evening in the Europa League and still give Steven Gerrard a headache.

“Everyone that Steven’s questioned right now is performing – on one hand, that’s fantastic, on the other hand, what a headache.”

Itten has made a total of 17 appearances this season, with three goals and two assists to his name.

He has the likes of Defoe, Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos to battle with for the centre-forward role at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, the Ibrox board have been told to hand a senior star a unique deal in contract talks.
