Rangers expert drops ‘disappointing’ John Souttar claim as footage emerges

Alan Hutton has claimed John Souttar should not have started for Rangers against Celtic on Saturday (8 April).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back said Souttar would never have been included in the starting XI if Connor Goldson had been fully fit.

The 26-year-old started only his second game since joining the Light Blues after returning from an injury that has sidelined him for the majority of the 2022-23 season.

As shown on Sky Sports (8 April), Jota was able to intercept a slack back-pass from the defender to score what was ultimately the winning goal for the Hoops.

Celtic defeated their Old Firm rivals 3-2 to increase the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 12 points.

When asked if Souttar’s lack of game time contributed to his mistake at the weekend, Hutton told Football Insider:I think that is a large part of it.

You have got to feel sorry for him. The injuries he has gone through have been really tough, all he wanted to do was get his Rangers career up and running and it has not managed to work out that way.

I think he is a really good player when he has played consistently.

He would not have started if it was not for Connor Goldson being injured so you have got that pressure of being thrown in. He has not played a lot of football and it is just that little bit of rustiness that is in his game.

He will be disappointed but he will come back stronger.
