Rangers expert fumes as controversial Todd Cantwell footage re-examined

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has insisted Scottish football needs to be patient with VAR.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back said that the standard needs to improve but mistakes are bound to occur.

There was a myriad of controversial refereeing decision throughout the Scottish Premiership at the weekend, including a sending off for a harsh second yellow card for Motherwell’s Callum Slattery against Rangers.

As shown on Sky Sports (18 March), Slattery was shown a second yellow for appearing to elbow Gers midfielder Todd Cantwell and VAR did not intervene.

As relayed by the BBC (21 March), the Scottish FA are considering using specialist video assistant referees as one of several options to improve the use of the technology in the Scottish top flight.

When asked if there are problems with refereeing in the country, Hutton told Football Insider:England has tried to fix that, they are making steps forward to try and improve.

I think that is what you have to do in any walk of life, you have to continue to get better. Does it need to improve? Yes, but ultimately we are all human. We all make mistakes, this is part of it.

The biggest shining light on it now is that VAR is there. So maybe refs are using it as a little bit of a crutch. But we all make mistakes and I think we just have to be patient until we can really get the best out of VAR.
