Rangers expert has new take on Connor Goldson controversy as footage re-analysed
Alan Hutton has claimed referee John Beaton made the right call not awarding a penalty against Rangers for Connor Goldson’s handball.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said from what he’s heard, referee John Beaton was acting within the rules by not awarding a penalty for handball against Goldson.
As shown on Sky Sports (2 January), the 30-year-old appears to handle the ball as Carl Starfelt hit a strike from close range.
Beaton waved away Celtic’s claims for a penalty and VAR Willie Collum did not send the referee to re-watch the incident.
The Hoops managed to claw back a point from the game despite going 2-1 down early on in the second half.
When asked for his assessment of the incident, Hutton told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen: “At first I thought he got away with one.
“The more I was looking into the, the ref was saying that if it is a reflex move and you go to cover your face and you are not making yourself bigger, within the rules it is down to the ref to make the decision.

“I think that is what he has done. It is very close. It is a fair hit from Starfelt from only two yards away, it is a reactive move.
“I still believe it could have gone either way, it depends on how you look at it. So I think Rangers probably did get away with one.“
In other news, according to an ex-Fifa official, football has changed forever for Celtic and Rangers as new details emerge.
