Rangers expert issues ‘absolutely frightening’ claim – ‘I’m not having a go at Celtic but…’

Rangers’ heavy defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League was “embarrassing” for the club.

That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former side’s latest defeat.

Rangers lost 7-1 to Liverpool on Wednesday (12 October) as a second-half collapse saw the Gers concede seven at home for the first time in their history.

Mohamed Salah scored the quickest hattrick in Champions League history during the final 10 minutes of the game.

McLeish insists Rangers could not match Liverpool’s “absolutely frightening” strength in depth.

“You have to account for the quality that came on for Liverpool in the second half,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“When I look back at previous Champions League games from Rangers and Celtic, Brendan Rodgers was doing the quadruple but they conceded seven at Celtic Park against PSG.

“I’m not having a go at Celtic but the quality when these teams are at it, it’s levels above where Celtic and Rangers are.

“Rangers got to half time and then they bring on Mo Salah, they had players on the bench to bring on who were absolutely frightening.

“On comes Salah and he gets one of the quickest hattricks ever. It is embarrassing to lose that game by that kind of margin at your home ground.

“But, again, Liverpool finally found their form at the wrong time for Rangers.”

The Gers are yet to pick up a point in the Champions League this season.

They are next in action against Motherwell on Sunday (16 October).
