Rangers expert issues 'big' Allan McGregor axe claim

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a “big decision” to make once Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin returns from injury

That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the goalkeeping situation at Ibrox.

As reported by the BBC (13 September), McLaughlin, who started the season as number one at Ibrox, picked up an injury ahead of the Champions League game against Napoli on 14 September.

McGregor saved two penalties against the Italian side and pulled off a string of fine saves as Rangers returned to winning ways in the Premiership against Dundee United on Saturday (17 September).

McLeish expects McGregor to keep the number one spot when McLaughlin returns to full fitness.

“Giovanni will realise McGregor is a guy who, his knowledge of the penalty box is awesome,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“It’s a big decision but I can see Giovanni sticking with McGregor. It’s really tough one when you start swapping goalies every week.

“If you have a clear plan and you can explain to the goalkeepers that one of them will be playing in the league and one of them will be playing the cup games, that can work.

“If the number one gets injured then the number two can come in, no hesitation. Just to let the number two be aware of everything.

“That’s what you should have at any club.”

McGregor has made 453 appearances for the Gers over two spells for the club.

The Light Blues are next in action against Hearts on 1 October.
