Rangers expert issues ‘huge’ Allan McGregor claim after source’s reveal

Alan Hutton has insisted Allan McGregor will leave Rangers at the end of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said whoever takes over between the sticks has “huge gloves to fill”.

On 20 February, sources told Football Insider that the 41-year-old is almost certain to end his playing career at Ibrox come the end of the season.

The keeper is out of contract in the summer and, barring an unexpected U-turn, won’t sign an extension to his current deal.

McGregor’s experience and authority are highly valued by the Light Blues and he could agree a coaching role at the end of the season.

The former Scotland international has made 475 appearances for the Glasgow club and has kept 213 clean sheets during his impressive career.

When asked if McGregor will hang up the gloves at the end of the season, Hutton told Football Insider:I think so.

I think he has had an amazing career, just got inducted into the hall of fame. The amount of big moments he has had, not only in a Rangers shirt, but just in general.

He is 41 years of age now and I genuinely thought last year would be his last but he has managed to wheel himself out for one more. I do think this will be the last year and he will hang up the gloves come the end of it.

But they are huge gloves to fill moving forward.

Rangers

Among the targets to replace the Ibrox veteran are Man United loanee Jack Butland and Livingston’s Shamal George.

Current second choice Jon McLaughlin, 35, is out of contract in 2024 and 24-year-old Robbie McCrorie’s deal runs until 2025.
