Rangers expert: SPFL ‘underselling itself’ after confirmed Sky news

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton is worried Scottish football is “underselling” itself.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back said that a better TV deal for the SPFL would help teams in the top leagues become better and grow.

On 5 May, Sky Sports confirmed that EFL clubs have unanimously approved a record domestic rights deal with Sky Sports worth £935million over five years.

The deal will see over 1000 matches broadcast each season, a record for any club football agreement.

Conversely, the SPFL confirmed a new £150m deal with Sky Sports back in September 2022 running for seven years that shows 60 matches per season starting from the 2024/25 season.

When asked if the Scottish league is being undersold, Hutton told Football Insider:It just depends how many people are out there who are actually wanting to watch it.

Do people in England want to watch Kilmarnock v Ross County? That is the thing.

You flip that round, look at the Championship and how exciting the league is whether it is the top or the bottom, the play-offs, everybody wants to watch that. It is one of the biggest leagues out there so there is a lot of demand for it.

Can we do better in terms of trying to get our league out there? But to do that it needs to be on the TV.

Possibly they are underselling it. The more money they get in from TV revenue, the more money the teams get and the better they can become.
