Rangers face ‘major’ worry after double injury blow – ‘it’s huge’, says expert

Ross McCausland’s and Dujon Sterling’s injuries are a “major worry” for Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton claimed the club’s growing injury list is a significant concern heading into a crucial run of fixtures.

Both Sterling and McCausland were withdrawn during Rangers’ Scottish Cup quarter-final win against Hibernian on Sunday (10 March), with Clement confirming that the former won’t play in the second leg of their Benfica tie.

The injury list at Ibrox does not appear to be impacting the club’s title charge, but missing the likes of Abdallah Sima, Oscar Cortes, Danilo and Todd Cantwell has given Clement fewer options.

Rangers suffer “major” injury blow

Hutton admitted that the manager has given the team a “steely mentality” that has softened the blow of the thin squad but remained concerned ahead of the important run-in.

“It’s not just losing both Sterling and McCausland, but the injury list is a major worry,” he told Football Insider.

“If the whole squad had been fit then I think Rangers would be in a really good position heading into these next fixtures.

“The manager has installed a really steely mentality at this moment in time.

“Games like the Benfica game or against Hibs – in previous seasons they might have crumbled in certain situations.

“That does not seem to be the case and Rangers are very positive in what they’re doing.

“But they can’t control the injuries.

“Rabbi Matondo being back is obviously huge, so hopefully that can ease the burden.”
