Rangers face new Ibrox delay after ’embarrassment’ – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers could delay further Ibrox redevelopment by 12 months after the costly overrun in the summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the delay to works in the Copland Stand were “embarrassing” and may have contributed to their poor start this season.

Rangers Review reported on 25 October that the Glasgow giants could put plans to redevelop the Broomloan Stand on the backburner after the summer’s events.

Minutes from a recent meeting with the fan advisory board show that chairman John Gilligan acknowledged that if Rangers were to undertake a similar project – then the board would have to plan for a period away from Ibrox.

Philippe Clement’s side hosted Motherwell, Dynamo Kyiv, St Johnstone and Ross County at Hampden Park during the construction period.

Plans are currently in place to revamp seating in both the Broomloan and Sandy Jardine Stand, but could now be in danger of delays.

Rangers could postpone more Ibrox construction by a year, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They are going to be very sensitive to this issue.

“The Ibrox delay over the summer was one of the most embarrassing situations for Rangers.

“Having to go to Hampden has contributed to their poor start this season.

“They will have to be sure, belt and braces, that everything is perfect before they start any more construction.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they postpone it a year.

“It was such a chastening experience in the summer.

“Football clubs do this all around the world all the time, so they’ve got to put the right project management in place to get it right.

“Rangers will be very wary.”
