
Rangers fans accuse Celtic of ‘cheating again’ v Aberdeen as VAR controversy analysed
Rangers fans on social media have accused arch-rivals Celtic of “cheating” after they avoided a penalty during their Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Aberdeen on Saturday (20 April).
Celtic are through to the Scottish Cup final after a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Aberdeen at Hampden Park.
Brendan Rodgers’ side were stung twice by late equalisers from Aberdeen in both regular and extra time.
However, Celtic maintained their composure and came out on top in the penalty shootout with Joe Hart recovering from his missed effort to deny Killian Phillips.
VAR was called into action multiple times, including late in the first half when Liam Scales appeared to handle the ball – however, officials ruled that the foul had occurred just outside of the box.
Celtic escaped another controversial penalty call in extra time after Cameron Carter-Vickers missed his clearance, but VAR again denied Aberdeen a spot-kick.
Rangers fans on social media were outraged by the decisions, with many supporters claiming that their Glasgow rivals were extremely lucky to avoid a penalty.
Rangers are next in action on Sunday (21 April) when they face Hearts at Hampden Park.
Philippe Clement’s side will hope to join Celtic in the final of the Scottish Cup, which is set to take place at Hampden Park on 25 May.
Celtic will now turn their attention towards a trip to Dundee in the Scottish Premiership next Sunday (28 April).
