‘Rangers fans are not happy’ – Ex-CEO suggests ‘your season is over’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the “season is over” for Rangers if they still trail Celtic by “nine to 12 points” at Christmas.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted a “three to four-year rebuild” is now underway at Ibrox, but claimed the current board “don’t have the talent or resources to do it properly”.

Rangers have already dropped maximum points in games against Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic and Aberdeen this term and sit nine points adrift of both clubs.

The Gers are also in crisis behind the scenes, with a permanent chairman and CEO yet to be appointed at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement’s side face a Scottish League Cup final against Celtic next month as big underdogs and are well-placed to progress to a knockout play-off in the Europa League.

‘Three or four-year’ Rangers rebuild is underway, says Wyness

Nevertheless, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “If we get towards Christmas and they are still nine or 12 points behind Celtic, that’s when you know your season is over.

“Rangers fans are not happy.

“But I think they now recognise that this is becoming a three or four-year project.

“It’s got to be looked at with fresh eyes because the current board don’t have the talent or resources to do it properly.

“I’m again calling for change at that level. It’s got to be a new investor.”
