Rangers fans are wrong about US takeover – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted some Rangers fans must change their “mentality” over a potential takeover if they want success.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed some fans are currently only wanting genuine supporters to invest, but should instead welcome “professionals” who can “run the club properly”.

Club 1872 is a Rangers fan group which still owns almost 5% of the club and has encouraged supporters to invest.

But according to City AM (27 August), the Ibrox club is attracting takeover interest from American investors who value the club at around £150million.

The report claims a number of the existing shareholders are open to selling.

Rangers fans must change mindset about potential US takeover, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Rangers would be a “good investment” but would require a change in “mindset” with the club’s supporters.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There is a problem with this takeover and the Rangers mentality, and what is demanded.

“I’ve already seen fans asking for any new buyer to be a fan of the club.

“I think that’s the most dangerous thing.

“What they need are professional people who can take the assets and run the club properly.

“They need at least five or six high-quality new players to even compete with Celtic at the moment.

“If you get into the Champions League, however, it’s a return on investment.

“The brand globally is a good investment.

“But it’s going to take a new mindset and a change in the fans’ minds.

“The question is, is Scottish football attractive enough? With Rangers and a European pass guaranteed every year – it could be.”
