Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at reports the club are targeting a sensational summer swoop for Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe.

The Scottish Sun claim manager Steven Gerrard wants the the Premier League legend, 35, as a blue riband signing and to spearhead the Light Blues attack next season.

It is said that Gerrard is eyeing a one-year loan for striker Defoe, who has two years left on his £65,000-a-week Bournemouth contract, as well as reunions with former Liverpool colleagues Martin Skrtel and Lucas Leiva.

Defoe has been a prolific scorer throughout his decade-and-a-half at the top level and was recalled to the England team last season following a goal-drenched spell at Sunderland.

With 163 Premier League goals to his name and 20 from 57 England matches he would certainly represent a marquee capture, and Rangers might have a chance of a deal after he was in and out of the Bournemouth side in 2017-18.
