Rangers fans explode as ‘horrific’ footage v Dynamo Kyiv re-analysed
Rangers fans have exploded at referee Marco Guida after Jefte was handed a controversial second yellow card in the defeat against Dynamo Kyiv.
Philippe Clement’s side were knocked out of the Champions League after losing 2-0 at Hampden Park, but the incident overshadowed the game and ultimate result.
Jefte’s second yellow card came shortly after half-time, with the scoreline level at 0-0, but swung the game in favour of the visitors who scored two late goals to win it.
Clement labelled the decision “the worst I have seen in more than 30 years of football”, as frustrations following the game boiled over.
As the clip did the rounds on social media, fans could not believe what they had seen. Jefte jumped up to compete for a header, won the ball, but was sent off.
VAR was also unable to intervene given the rules which state they will not step in to decide yellow card decisions – only straight reds.
Rangers fans lash out at referee after Jefte decision v Dynamo Kyiv
Supporters not just of Rangers but far beyond were left stunned by the call and questioned what the referee was thinking sending Jefte off.
While there is no guarantee which way the tie would have gone if not for the decision, the hosts would have had a far better chance at winning with 11 men on the field.
Given the money involved in Champions League qualification – £15.9million for qualifying for the league phase, £600,000 per draw and £1.8millon per win – the effects of the controversy lay far beyond what happened on the football pitch.
Fans have flocked to social media to voice their anger, with the call labelled “horrific”, “embarrassing” and “one of the worst ever”.
In other news, Chelsea have responded to Rangers’ Leo Castledine proposal.
