Rangers fans get ‘major’ warning over 49ers takeover from boardroom source
Rangers are set for a takeover after 49ers Enterprises agreed a deal in principle to take a majority stake at Ibrox.
The investment is much-needed after the Glasgow giants reported a £17.2million loss for the 2023-24 season back in October of last year.
Rangers have also suffered from a lack of transfer investment in recent seasons and have dropped further behind Old Firm rivals Celtic.
The 49ers, who also own English Championship side Leeds United, could provide a welcome boost to the transfer war chest upon their arrival at Ibrox.
But Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has given Rangers fans a “major” warning over the takeover.

Rangers takeover to go through ‘in the next couple of months’
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he doesn’t expect “major moves” from the 49ers in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Rangers are a long way adrift of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and have been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions.
Player | Fee (€) |
Mohamed Diomande | 5 million |
Nedim Bajrami | 4 million |
Robin Propper | 3.2 million |
Hamza Igamane | 2.36 million |
Vaclav Cerny | Loan (Fee – 1.5 million) |
Connor Barron | Free |
Liam Kelly | Free |
Clinton Nsiala | Free |
Neraysho Kasanwirjo | Loan |
Rafael Fernandes | Loan |
Wyness insisted the Gers squad will be rebuilt over “a couple of windows”.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I expect the 49ers to get it through in the next couple of months.
“That way they are in for the transfer window, they can start to get things moving.
“But I don’t expect major moves this summer. They’ll be moving in the right direction and over a couple of windows we’ll see a rebuilding of the squad to get Rangers competing.
“I think Rangers and Celtic are both attractive investments because of their international fanbases.
“They’ve got to do more now because they have huge roots overseas. The 49ers can help them with that.”

Rangers ‘burning money’ under current ownership
Finance expert Stefan Borson has told Football Insider that Rangers are “burning money” in their current ownership structure.
Rangers have recently received a £3.6million injection from their current owners in the form of a new share issue.
Borson claimed that share issue will have been needed to fund day-to-day operations at Ibrox.
