Rangers fans react as Celtic make ‘pathetic’ announcement: ‘Joke of a club’

Rangers fought their way back into the Premiership title race by beating Celtic 3-1 on Saturday.

The Gers are currently enjoying a run of just one defeat in their 12 league games since Danny Rohl’s arrival, and that has seen them cut the gap to Hearts at the top of the table to just six points.

Youssef Chermiti was the hero for Rangers as they triumphed in the Old Firm Derby, as he netted twice before Mikey Moore added a third to seal the victory.

Rangers fans wasted no time in mocking their Glasgow counterparts after the win, and that has only ramped up in the aftermath of a seismic change at Parkhead on Monday.

Rangers fans label Martin O’Neill as ’embarrassing’ after Celtic return

Celtic sacked Wilfried Nancy on Monday, with his heavy defeat on home turf in the Old Firm viewed as the final straw of his disastrous reign by the board.

The Frenchman oversaw just two wins during his time in charge of the Bhoys, and his woeful start had quickly seen fans pile the pressure on the club hierarchy to relieve him of his duties.

The Celtic board have been quick to react after their defeat to Rangers at the weekend, and they have already reinstated Martin O’Neill at the helm, who had held the position on an interim basis prior to Nancy’s appointment.

O’Neill has now been handed the reins until the end of the season, with his assistant Shaun Maloney also returning to his previous post.

Rangers fans have been quick to mock their rivals for their decision on X, with one supporter suggesting the appointment is “pathetic,” since O’Neill helped Celtic “scrape past bottom six opposition” during his previous stint.

Another fan added that O’Neill will be “gone before the season is out.”

O’Neill and Maloney were also branded as “embarrassing” for “sitting by the phone hoping Celtic would call them,” while another fan suggested that “the banter years have well and truly arrived for Celtic.”

O’Neill set for favourable start on Celtic return

Celtic have been in turmoil under Nancy, but they could easily find themselves back on track under O’Neill within a matter of weeks.

The 73-year-old has a few games to get his feet back under the table against mid-table opposition, before a truly massive clash against Hearts approaches on the horizon at the end of January.

A home meeting with Dundee United is first on the agenda for the veteran boss, before a trip to Falkirk follows on 14 January.

O’Neill then had a pair of cup ties to work his way around, with lowly Auchinleck Talbot his team’s opponents in the Scottish Cup, and Bologna their next game in the Europa League.

Those first three games in particular should give the new boss plenty of time to get his group refreshed with his ideas and get them back into the winning mindset that he instilled during his previous stint.

The meeting with Hearts on 25 January will then likely be crucial in deciding where the title will end up at the end of the season.
