'Chaos', 'Too late' - Rangers fans react as defender's new side suffer shock turn of fortune

Rangers defender David Bates surprised everyone when he announced he was joining German giants Hamburg at the end of the season on a four-year-deal – and Gers fans are certain now that the 21-year-old has made the wrong move.

HSV were relegated from the German top flight for the first time in 55 years after a 2-1 defeat by Borussia Monchengladbach at home on the final day of the season, a shock turn of fortunes which sees Hamburg leave the Bundesliga after being the only team to have been there for every season.

Since the 21-year-old announced he was heading for Germany, the Light Blues have confirmed the appointment of Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager – leading fans to wonder if Bates was having second thoughts.

Here are some of their comments on Twitter:

The defender joined the Gers from Raith Rovers in 2016 – initially on loan – and has become a big favourite with the Gers fans after his performances since coming into the side in December to replace the injured Bruno Alves.

The 21-year-old was a first-pick until picking up an ankle injury himself in March which kept him out of action until the recent clash with Kilmarnock at Ibrox.
