Rangers ace Andy Halliday was handed a surprise start against Celtic in Sunday’s Old Firm clash after a broken hand ruled Declan John out of the side – and Gers fans were pleased with his performance after his howler at Hampden a few weeks ago.

Halliday was hooked before half-time in the 4-0 thrashing by the Hoops in the Scottish Cup semi-final but was handed a chance to earn a reprieve with an impressive performance against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The 26-year-old was called into action repeatedly in the early going as Celtic pushed looking for an opener and done well up against James Forrest.

Fans were impressed with how Halliday put himself about – with one saying he was “channeling the ghost of Colin Hendry.”

The 26-year-old spent the first-half of the season on loan with Azeri side FK Gabala before being recalled by the Gers in January.

Since returning to Ibrox at the start of the year, Halliday has been largely a fringe player for the Light Blues but has started both of the last two Old Firm clashes.

With Declan John suffering from a broken hand and Lee Wallace suspended then Halliday could find himsef given an extended run in the starting XI until the end of the season.
