'Goner', 'Nicely timed boot in the haws' - Rangers fans react as King hints big name to be axed

By Richard Parks

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their conviction that Dave King has sounded the death knell for the reign of Graeme Murty.

King revealed on the official Rangers website on Monday that the club will appoint a manager in the summer ready to deliver “immediate success” and will be backed by the Ibrox board.

The Ibroxx chairman did not specifically state that Murty, who was put in charge for the rest of the season in December after two months as caretaker, will be replaced but strongly hinted that will be the case.

King explained that “Graeme can be proud of what he has achieved” but insisted that results have “not been unsatisfactory” due to the lack of stability in the dugout.

“Whoever is appointed must be able to meet the unique challenges of managing Rangers and ensuring immediate success,” King told the Rangers website.

“It is a priority that we commence next season with the best appointment we can make and that we move forward rapidly. Rangers is synonymous with winning and I want to repeat my commitment that neither I, nor any of the other directors, will consider our work complete until Rangers has been restored to the top of our game.”

Supporters are now convinced that Murty will not get the job on a full-time basis.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Rangers reclaimed second place in the Scottish Premiership with Saturday’s 4-0 win over Dundee as Murty’s side edged in front of Aberdeen on goal difference.

Leaders Celtic need one more win to secure the title, which would be the club’s seventh in a row, and they are also on the verge of a second consecutive treble.

Brendan Rodgers’ side take on Rangers in Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final, which represents the Light Blues’ biggest match of the season and the chance to win some silverware following a few miserable years.
