Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their incredulity after Michael Gray claimed the club should make a shock swoop to sign Wayne Rooney.
The former left-back made the suggestion on the Jim White Show on talkSPORT on Tuesday as the duo asked callers if the England and Manchester United legend could be a target for his former England colleague and fellow Scouser Steven Gerrard.
It comes amid reports Rooney, 32, is growing frustrated with life under Sam Allardyce at Goodison Park and could quit the club this summer even though a year remains on the contract he signed only last summer.
Gray told talkSPORT: “If Wayne’s time is up at Everton, there’s no reason why Rangers shouldn’t put their name forward” and he later added that the player has the “quality” to transform the Glasgow giants.
Fans of Rangers and other clubs took to social media to react to Gray’s claim, which many dismissed as outlandish, given Rooney’s reported £160,000-a-week deal at Everton.
Others pointed out that he would be a superb addition to the team Gerrard has started the process of rebuilding, in spite of his advancing years and 16 years in professional football.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
I’d personally pay for Rooney’s helicopter up to Glasgow if the Rangers link has any legs to it. It’s not worked and he’s become a sad sight to behold every week, time to let go. Can imagine Kenwright would try to block on any deal though by lying down in front Wayne’s car. #EFC
