Centre court: Skrtel is regarded as Liverpool's number one centre-back

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to deliver mixed verdicts after it was reported that former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is one of Steven Gerrard’s top transfer targets.

The Daily Record claim that Gerrard is on the verge of being appointed the new Ibrox manager and has set his sights on a reunion with former Anfield teammate Skrtel.

It is said that the 97-times Slovakia international, 33, is Gerrard’s priority target after he put together a shortlist of potential new signings in talks with director of football Mark Allen and managing director Stewart Robertson.

Skrtel, who stands at 6ft 3in according to stats site Transfermarkt, joined Fenerbahce from Liverpool in the summer of 2016 and has a year remaining on his contract with the Turkish club.

He was a mainstay of the Merseyside giants’ side for eight years and made 320 appearances for the club, most of them alongside Gerrard.

Rangers fans are split between those who believe he would be an “excellent signing” and others who are concerned about his age.
