Rangers fans have delivered mixed verdicts on Twitter to Josh Windass’ celebration following his first-half goal in their 2-0 Scottish Premiership win against Partick Thistle on Tuesday night.
The attacking midfielder gestured to the away support by putting his finger to his lips at Firhill after hitting a fine opener at Firhill.
It was his 10th goal of what has been an increasingly impressive season but Windass has been made a scapegoat by a section of the Ibrox support who regard him as symptomatic of the inconsistencies of the team.
The Light Blues bounced back from their weekend defeat against Hibernian as they cut the gap on Aberdeen to three points through the first-half strike from Windass and a second from James Tavernier.
Windass silenced his many hecklers and his celebration was a massive talking point on social media after the game.
Many fans claim the player was entitled to make such a gesture given the criticism he endures, while others claimed he was putting a “block” between himself and the hardcore support.
Here is a selection of the best messages on Twitter:
This doesn’t bother me one bit, some of the comments oan twitter when they seen his name on the team sheet where ridiculous, as well as some grief in the stadium. Best way to shut them up .. a goal and a assist ???????? @WindassJnr pic.twitter.com/F2WYQBAKe7

I was in that crowd. I never criticised him on social media. If he thinks that’s a good thing to do to the thousands of fans who paid to be there he better think again

We’re the most bipolar fans in the world. Windass can go from an English premiership level of player, to Vauxhall conference after 2 games ????????

Whether u agree or disagree ,, windass is putting a block in there between him & the fans!!
Only 1 winner there us! The fans!! Has to watch what he’s doing

Windass wasn’t telling the rangers fans to ‘shh’ he was silencing all the people to give him sheer amounts of pointless abuse each week, no matter how he performs, every right to in my opinion

Another goal and assist for Windass the night but the goon brigade are out in full force because he shhh’d the middle aged men who call him pish every week ????

Not at all. Better players than Windass have had stick from the fans without this petulant pish.
He’s been invisible far too often – Aberdeen , Ross County and Hibs recently – to get away with that.
If he can’t handle it, he can always go back to the English lower leagues.

quite right , if fans are going to give it out they’d better be prepared to take a bit back , be great if they praised @WindassJnrfor his positive attributes

Its Understandable he frustrated with his criticism, probably made a scapegoat on numerous occasions when he should t have been! But a Goal and an assist should be enough
