Rangers fans suggest journalist is getting sacked after what he said on-air about Ally McCoist
Rangers fans are fuming with journalist Tom English for his “scandalous” take on Ally McCoist’s controversial Old Firm comments.
The Gers legend, 61, hit out at Scotland’s “mad” new hate crime law live on talkSPORT on Tuesday (2 April), claiming that he and “48,000 [fans] will be committing a breach of that hate Bill in the particular Rangers v Celtic game we are all going to.”
The new bill, which criminalised “threatening or abusive behaviour that is intended to stir up hatred” has been met with criticism.
However, English, BBC Scotland’s chief sports writer, was far from impressed with McCoist’s comments and accused him of intending to sing sectarian songs at the Old Firm showdown.
Rangers fans fume at Tom English after “disgraceful” Ally McCoist verdict
English said live on BBC Radio Scotland on Saturday (6 April) that McCoist was “criticising the hate crime bill, which many have been and that’s his prerogative”.
He also “paraphrased” the former Rangers boss by claiming he would be “‘singing songs that will be in breach of the hate crime bill on Sunday’. Meaning, he will be singing the Billy Boys and he will be singing about [expletive] Blood.”
In the wake of the controversy, McCoist confirmed that he will not be attending the Old Firm clash at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon (7 April) due to family commitments.
However, Rangers fans were gobsmacked by English’s take on McCoist’s verdict and have branded him a “disgrace”.
They have taken to social media to react to the comments, and supporters have urged the journalist to get a lawyer after his “defamatory” and “actionable” suggestions.
