Rangers handed major title boost while Celtic hit amid near-£15m reveal – Agbonlahor

Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title hopes have been handed a major boost after they kept hold of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed selling the pair on deadline day would have effectively handed Celtic the title.

As reported by the Athletic on 19 August, the Gers have a £14.4million gap in their finances and the club’s plan has always been to cash in on their most valuable players.

However, none of the club’s big stars secured a move over the summer.

Both Kent and Morelos have just two years left to run on their contracts.

Asked for his assessment of the situation, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “They had to keep hold of them.

“If they didn’t hold onto Morelos and Kent then the title probably changes hands from Rangers to Celtic. Keeping them makes Rangers favourites.

“That Rangers team is a good team but when you start to lose one or two of those star players, it’s not a great team. They need those players in there.

“For me, Steven Gerrard will be quite happy with his squad at the moment and will be thankful that nobody went before the window closed.”

Morelos has already scored three times and provided one assist in seven games across all competitions for Rangers this season already.

Kent has failed to reach his best form this term and has provided two assists in seven appearances across all competitions.
