‘Rangers have agreed deal for star of the future’ – ex-Aberdeen chief wowed
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers have signed a “star of the future” in Lyall Cameron despite a “difficult window” at Ibrox.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed qualification for the last 16 in the Europa League will have lessened an “emergency” need for further new signings.
Rangers confirmed on Monday (3 February) that Cameron has agreed a deal to join in the summer when his contract at Dundee expires.
Rangers only moved to sign one player in the January window, bringing young Lille defender Rafael Fernandes to the club on loan.
That is despite struggles in the Scottish Premiership this season, with Philippe Clement‘s side trailing leaders Celtic by 13 points after 25 games.
Cameron backed to be ‘star of the future’ for Rangers
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It was a difficult window for Rangers.
“It’s a catch-22 in the sense that they’ve still got European games, and they have a chance to go further if they put in performances.
“They want to give it a go, but it isn’t the emergency situation they had before. Qualifying for the latter stages has eased the troubles, and they can now look at it in the summer when they have a chance to really rebuild.
“They did make one really interesting signing, getting the pre-contract for Cameron from Dundee.

“He’s going to be a star of the future. That’s something which really bodes well for Rangers going forward.
“Rangers managed to steady the ship and that’s what they’ve got to do going forward.”
