Rangers have just averted Govan Road bust-up – McAvennie

Rangers ‘did what they had to do’ in their 1-0 Scottish Premier League win over Dundee United on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes Rangers needed to win this game and fans will be satisfied, even if it ‘wasn’t pretty’ from Philippe Clement’s side.

Tom Lawrence, 30, showed some lovely footwork to get around the Dundee defence before slotting home past Jack Walton.

In the end, his seventh-minute strike was enough to secure all three points and keep the Glasgow club within touching distance of rivals Celtic.

Rangers avoided fan unrest with Dundee United win

Rangers are now set to return to Ibrox for their next game against Dundee FC in the Scottish League Cup for the first time this season.

The switch comes with the club sitting in third place, five points behind Aberdeen and Old Firm rivals Celtic in the race for the league title.

“There was one sports writer who wrote, ‘Scottish football gets a bad name and there is no wonder after this game'”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Rangers did what they had to do, they won. Dundee United had been playing great but they didn’t play well.

“Whether that’s down to Rangers or not, I don’t know but Jim Goodwin says they had a couple of chances and deserved to win.

“I don’t watch all the games because I don’t have to but sometimes you’ve got to win ugly and that’s what they’ve done.

“If they had come away with anything but three points, oh my god, there would have been people hanged all along Govan Road.

“They got the win, that’s all I can say. It wasn’t pretty but sometimes you’ve got to do that.”
