Rangers have pulled off 'masterstroke' after what 'I've seen' from John Lundstram - pundit

Noel Whelan has heralded Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s “masterstroke” to play John Lundstram at centre-back for Rangers in Thursday’s win over RB Leipzig.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old “can play anywhere” thanks to his physicality and ability to read the game.

Lundstram was a standout performer in the 3-1 win at Ibrox, scoring the third goal to send the Gers to the Europa League final.

He has barely featured as a makeshift centre-back under Van Bronckhorst.

Whelan hailed the Gers “mastermind” for his tactical decision against the German outfit.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “What an achievement for Rangers, first of all. They deserved it, they really did.

“They fed off the atmosphere from the fans, they made it hostile, they made it loud. The fans gave them the energy and the momentum and the players didn’t disappoint.

“John Lundstram, on a free contract, it’s got to be one of the best free contracts they’ve signed. Now I’ve seen the best of him.

“Lundstram is one of these players that you can play anywhere. He played at wing-back at times for Sheffield United. He’s got the ability to play centre-back; the height, the strength, the power.

“He reads the game very well and he can step out from the backline into that midfield to play balls through and start the attack. A mastermind masterstroke there from Van Bronckhorst.

“Considering they’ve lost two very important players in Morelos and Roofe, to score three goals, three different scorers, people are taking responsibility on their shoulder to cover those injuries.”

Lundstram has played 45 times for Rangers since joining on a free last summer.
