Rangers have spoken to a former Man United manager whose ‘name’s not been mentioned’

Rangers may have secretly spoken to a new managerial candidate behind the scenes after missing out on top target Steven Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard rejected the Rangers job, for a chance to take the Ibrox hotseat for a second spell after winning the Scottish Premiership title with the club in the 2020-21 season.

Danny Rohl has emerged as the favourite for the Rangers job now Gerrard is out of the running, with the club looking to appoint Russell Martin’s successor before the visit of Dundee United to Ibrox.

Martin lasted just 123 days at Rangers, with the club lying eighth in the Scottish Premiership table, already 11 points behind league leaders Hearts.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have been on Rangers shortlist

Speaking on The Good Bad Football Podcast, [13 October], former Man United midfielder Paul Scholes potentially revealed that former team mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have been a contender in Rangers‘ managerial search.

“I was actually with a lad the other night who told me he was actually going to meet Rangers. I’m not sure if he did but his name’s not been mentioned,” Scholes revealed.

“I don’t think he was going for it. They contacted him and he was going to meet him in London the day after.”

Former Man United team mate Nick Butt then said: “Oh, I know who you mean.”

Scholes then replied “No” when asked by podcast host Paddy McGuinness whether it was a current manager.

Questioned further, Scholes answered “no comment” was quizzed on whether this person had managed Man United.

But funnily enough, his name’s not been mentioned,” Scholes said.

Butt then said: “[It’s] Ole you are talking about, aren’t you?”

Scholes replied with another “No. No comment,” suggesting that Solskjaer and Rangers chiefs had held talks.

Solskjaer managerial record analysed amid new Rangers links

Solskjaer was most recently sacked by Turkish club Besiktas, after just seven months in the role.

The Norwegian endured a three-year spell at Old Trafford, but he still has critics from some around his managerial capabilities.

During his time at Man United, Solskjaer failed to win a trophy at the club, coming runners up to Villarreal in the 2020-21 Europa League final.

Rangers may want to appoint someone more experienced or with a proven track record, though that process would go against current front runner Rohl.

The Gers are potentially stuck after the shock rejection by Gerrard, a fans favourite who many thought would be heading back to Glasgow.
